Joining a Writing Group

I did it! I reached beyond my comfort zone and joined a writing group – the Romance Writers Association of South Africa (ROSA), Cape Town chapter.

What an amazing experience meeting fellow dreamers, ordinary woman, all with one thing in common – a love of writing. Some of the ladies are published authors; and some, like me, are still ‘getting there’.

They were warmly welcoming, making me feel at home from the moment I walked into the room. Dorothy Ewels (Dorothy recently published her first book, Love at Last) ‘mothers’ the CT group, her bubbly personality making her the perfect candidate for the important task. Kudos to you, Dorothy.

What truly struck me though, was how easily they shared – advice, experience, encouragement – and being a greedy sponge, I absorbed every drop on offer. I’ve been operating in an isolated bubble of self-doubt for so long that being in a group with like-minded woman was liberating.

I left that first meeting – besides armed with a load of information regarding self-publishing thanks to Dani RenĂ©  selflessly giving up an entire Saturday to run a workshop on the topic – fired up and eager for the next steps.

There’s still a long road ahead: editing, proofreading, cover design, and marketing (urgh!) before I even hit the publish button, but, and here is the clincher, I am not traveling the road on my own anymore. By saying this, I am by no means diminishing the enormous encouragement I have received from my family and friends over the first part of my journey. Their support has been, and will continue to be, much appreciated and sorely needed. I love you all dearly, and I am truly grateful for every word of positivity spoken over me. Please don’t stop.

But belonging to a group of writers is different, because each person in the group has traveled, is traveling, will travel, my journey. We are all at different milestones on the road, but our destination is the same – being published.

I am so glad I took the step outside my isolated writing bubble and joined ROSA. Thank you, ladies, for welcoming me!
